Daufuskie Island is a historical sea island off of the Hilton Head area and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Only accessible by boat, there are roughly around 150 residents that live here year round. The historic district has several artisan shops and restaurants, along with the Daufuskie Island Rum Company, a popular stop for all.On the island you’ll find some private residential clubs like Haig Point Club and Bloody Point, and other quaint houses around the oceanfront. According to research done by the Savannah College of Art and Design, there are excellent examples of Gullah homes that have remained the same. There are some direct descendants of the Gullah people living in this area on land which they have owned since just after the Civil War. The First Union African Baptist Church is the oldest building on the island, dating back to 1881. You can still visit many of the historical buildings that were bought and restored or preserved all along the island, telling a story.
